Gemona and its surroundings | Nature

Gemonese is a treasure chest of biodiversity since every corner of the plain is characterized by naturalistic sites of high value. For the most part they are linked to the presence of water because the territory rests on a vast underground lake filled by the floods of the Tagliamento river, which created it. In fact, the Osoppo-Gemona Valley results from the action of the Tilaventino glacier first and of the solid transport of Tagliamento and other pre-Alpine streams later. The plain is an imposing mass of alluvium which contains the most important aquifer in the region.

Walking along the edges of the country roads it is not difficult to find small streams, irrigation ditches, springs, marshes and, when it rains a lot, flooded lowlands. It is the system of water resurgences from the sub-bed of the Tagliamento river and the pre-Alpine streams that infiltrate the gravel of the plain to re-emerge near the morainic amphitheater.
