Gemona and its surroundings are the geographical heart of Friuli and a very particular territory: an alluvial plain surrounded by hills and pre-alpine mounts, after Italy unification it became a district. In 1976 it was hit by a disastrous earthquake. If the physical reconstruction of buildings and production activities has been completed, the recovery of traditions and the reconstruction of the social fabric of communities is still underway, since the trauma of loss of identity is difficult to overcome.
Ecomuseo delle Acque has been operating in this area since 2000. Museum open to the territory, it aims to document and enhance the rich local cultural heritage, consisting of places, buildings, activities. It also promotes participatory projects with the aim of preserving memories, knowledge and traditions.
